Distribution, habitat and behavior

exanthematicus

Varanus exanthematicus lives in the sandy loamy desert areas of the Senegal in the west up to Sudan and Ethiopia in the east. Frequently it will be found near permanent watercourses (MERTENS 1942).

Keeping and breeding

The captive husbandry of Varanus exanthematicus is reported several times (BAYLESS & REYNOLDS 1992, RHEINSHAGEN 1993, BAYLESS 1994, RÖDER & HORN 1994, WESIAK 2006).
Before mating will start a courtship display, which is indicated by head bobbing of the male and biting into the front legs of the female, starts. About four weeks after the mating, the female lays 16-53 eggs per clutch. The young animals hatch at incubation temperatures between 29 and 30°C after 152-184 days. They measure about 70 mm SVL and have a total length of 130 mm, the weight is 20 g on average.
RHEINSHAGEN (1993) reports that the offspring take pinkie mice after about six weeks. The young monitors grew up quickly and reached a total length of 40-50 cm (males) or 25-30 cm (females) after one year.
W
ESIAK (2006) reported from one female, which produced 2 clutches 38 and 37 days after matings. The clutch size was always 25 eggs. Incubation was at 28°C ans after 169 to 176 days 5 offspring from the first clutch, and after 178 to 180 days 8 offspring from the second clutch hatched. The babies had a SVL between 70 and 79 mm and a total length between 129 and 158 mm. The body mass was between 6.2 and 10.85 g. Large crickets were offered as food for the babies.
