Rossel Island Monitor
  Varanus telenesetes is a member of the V. prasinus group and like the other members belongs to the subgenera Euprepiosaurus.
It was described on a single speciemen from Rossel Island by SPRACKLAND (1991b).
The major color is black without a visible pattern on the back. The coloration on the underside is cream-colored with deep brown spots. The throat is banded. The tongue color is yellow. The head scales are big, flat and smooth. The nostril is situated in the middle between the tip of the snout and the eye. The soles of the foot show bright scales. 100 scale rows are around midbody. The length of the tail is about 1.9 times the SVL. The tail scales are weakly keeled. The total length is up to 70 cm.

Distribution, habitat and behavior

V. telenesetes is only known from Rossel Island (SPRACKLAND 1991b). This monitor species is furthermost east spread relative of the group of the Green Tree Monitors. It's next relative is V. prasinus from New Guinea, which is about 330 km away from the distribution area of V. telenesetes.


Keeping and breeding
No data are published on the captive husbandry of this monitor species yet.
The enclosure should be build for tree dwellers. It should be furnished with robust branches, maybe some plants (I would prefer some plastic plants), and a water basin. Some pieces of cork bark and a nesting box are essentiell. Wood chips are used as ground cover. You can also fill wood chips into the nesting box. As food we offer mice, and large insects.
