 A new monitor species of the Varanus prasinus-complex from Misol island is described as Varanus reisingeri sp. n. This taxon isdistinguished from Varanus prasinus by the black dorsal coloration with bright yellow pattern. It is distinguished from V. macraei, which occurs on Batanta Island, by having a different coloration, which consists of bright yellow spots and ocelli, ordered in 16 crossrows on the back, versus a blue coloration in V. macraei. The ventral coloration is a bright yellow.
V. reisingeri can grow up to 30 cm (SVL) and up to 80 cm total length.

habitat and behavior |

The
distribution of Varanus reisingeri is restricted to Misol Island, south west of the Voglekop Peninsula of New Guinea, Indonesia.

Keeping
and breeding |
JACOBS (2008) reported a successful captive husbandry of V. reisingeri. The female produced several clutches with up to 4 eggs. Incubation of the eggs was maintained in damp vermiculite at temperatures around 29°C. After 175 days the babies hatched. They had a total length between 220 and 245 mm, the body mass was between 10 and 12,5 g. |
